Medellín city crews finished installing new resistance bands and dip stations at two central parks on July 8, expanding free training options for residents ahead of the July-August dry season.
City data from the Secretaría de Deportes shows 42,000 registered users logged workouts at municipal outdoor facilities in the first half of 2026, a 19 percent increase from the same period last year. The rise tracks higher temperatures that push people outdoors and away from indoor gyms charging 80,000 to 120,000 pesos monthly. Local health officials note that consistent use of these circuits correlates with lower reported rates of metabolic conditions in the comunas that host the busiest sites.
The Parque de la 80 in Laureles offers a full circuit along Calle 80 between Carreras 70 and 72. Eight pull-up stations, four leg-press platforms and a 400-metre rubberised track sit under shade trees maintained by the comuna’s sports office. Morning sessions start at 6 a.m. when the temperature sits around 19 degrees Celsius. A second location in Belén, the Parque Juan Pablo II on Calle 30A, added weighted sleds and plyo boxes in March 2025. Both parks remain open from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily with no reservations required.
Comuna 13 residents also use the stepped calisthenics area beside the escalators on Carrera 105. The site includes parallel bars at three heights and a 200-metre uphill sprint path that locals time with phone apps. The Secretaría de Deportes supplies free group classes led by certified trainers on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7 a.m. at both the Laureles and Belén locations.
Arrive with water and a towel; the city provides no lockers. Beginners can follow the QR codes posted at each station, which link to short demonstration videos produced by the municipal sports department. Those seeking progression can join the free Saturday morning circuit training at 8 a.m. in Parque Belén, where trainers adjust repetitions based on individual fitness levels. Residents report the best results when they combine two park visits per week with the existing ciclorrutas that connect Laureles to the river path in 12 minutes by bike.
